As votes are counted, Council waits to hear if Calverley Square project gets the green light

All political parties have fielded candidates with 78 prospective councillors from all the main political parties contesting 18 seats in 16 wards, including two by-elections in Park ward and Paddock Wood East.

Results are expected this afternoon [Friday].

Nationally, both Conservatives and Labour have suffered losses over Brexit, with smaller parties and independents winning seats.

The Tories have lost nearly 450 seats and 18 English councils so far, many of them to the Liberal Democrats.

Labour has also had a disappointing night, losing around 80 seats by the morning.

Meanwhile, TWBC waits to hear if its controversial Calverley Square development will get the go ahead as the results of the CPO [compulsory purchase order] inquiry is also expected this afternoon.

The Planning Inspectorate will confirm whether the CPOs have been approved after the results of the local election have been announced sometime this afternoon.
