Women’s football: Shock as Angels’ prolific Skilton misses penalty – and the retake

Women's football: Tonbridge Angels Ladies overcome stubborn Vinters to maintain pressure

TONBRIDGE ANGELS Ladies were denied in their bid to finish third in their first season in the South East Counties Women’s Football League by promoted Margate at Tonbridge Farm.

Margate took the lead midway through the first half with one of their typical counter-attacks, Kara Richardson scoring from the edge of the box.

Angels’ best chance came when centre-back Beth Kemp came forward and unleashed a shot from 30 yards which hit the underside of the bar.

A double substitution was made on the hour to unlock the Margate defence but another counter- attack saw Beth Cooper score the visitors’ second.

The arrears were reduced in the 67th minute as good work by Abbie Skilton freed up Kemp on the right and her cross met substitute Sam James at the near post, who fired in from close range.

The Angels had a golden chance to draw level from the penalty spot after a push on Heidi Archer.

Skilton blazed it over the bar, and even when the referee ordered a retake the striker put it wide.

It was a double blow for Skilton, who has scored against every other team this season.
