MORE than 50 swimmers braved the outdoor waters of Charlton Lido again to raise funds for Demelza Hospice Care for Children, which helps hundreds of families across West Kent and East Sussex.
Among them was Adam Phillips, brother of the late Demelza Phillips, after whom the charity was named. He took on a 2km challenge along with 20 others.
‘Snowflake Swim’ was held for the first time last year. Participants aged from six to 72 took the plunge, swimming between two and 40 lengths of the pool in Hornfair Park on January 29.
There were many who wore fancy dress, including a school of singing fish from the Bexleyheath Rock Choir and characters from Star Wars.
Events Co-ordinator Gemma Murray, who took part in the swim, said: “We were really pleased to see so many people embracing this chilly challenge again this year.
“Last year our swimmers raised an incredible £20,473 and we would love this year’s brave participants to beat that!”
Demelza provides specialist one-to-one care and support art for young people with terminal illness up to the age of 19.
The charity also offers access to life-enhancing facilities like a hydrotherapy pool and therapies such as music and art.
