Sloe Gin World Championships return to Frant

The George Inn, in High Street, will stage its tenth annual competition on December 15, which is set to pit 30-40 entries in a World Cup style contest.

Pub regular and reigning champion George Shaw said: “It gets bigger every year and we are attracting entries from as far as Vancouver.

“Last year we had a whole group from Germany come over.”

Four judges will whittle down the entries before deciding on a winner.

Be it the real thing or the sloe variety, it is certainly a popular time for gin – with the market as a whole said to be worth £1.6billion.

The Sloe Gin World Championships follows the successful Gin & Jazz Festival in The Pantiles, held earlier this year.

There are also categories for other drinks, including damson gin and sloe vodka.

Organisers are now looking for a charity for whom proceeds shall be given to. In previous editions MS Society has been chosen in support of pub regular Mike Matthews – a long-term victim of the illness, who died last year.

Commercial entries cost £30 and private ones £5. For more information, including details of how charities can get involved, email
