School team is victorious in Tonbridge

A team of parents from Claremont Primary School beat 21 other teams to win the 2022 Tonbridge Dragon Boat race earlier this month.

On Sunday, September 4 the Tonbridge Lions Club Annual Dragon Boat Race took place on the River Medway in the centre of Tonbridge.

The crowds took advantage of a beautiful day and lined the banks of the river throughout the day to watch and support 22 teams take part in a series of competitive races with the three fastest teams going through to the grand final at the end of the day.

The grand final did not disappoint with a close and thrilling race, ‘Claremont Komodos’ made up of parents of pupils from the school, beat ‘Imperial Bidborough Dragons’ with ‘Mums and Dads Army’ coming in third. ‘Tonbridge Welcomes Refugees’ won the ‘Best Dressed’ competition.

Tom Tugendhat MP presented the trophy to the winning side.

The organising committee led by Bob Taylor said: “We are extremely pleased with the way the day went. The population of Tonbridge turned out in droves to enjoy very competitive racing throughout the day, which was conducted in a great spirit. We look forward to organising next year’s race.

“Tonbridge Lions Club would like to thank everyone for their support, especially Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Tonbridge Town Team, Nick on the chequered flag, Martin & Co and Tonbridge School for providing contributions towards the event,” they added.
