Rare BMW races again

Based in Tunbridge Wells, H-Engineering prides itself on a reputation as ‘the South East’s premier classic and vintage vehicle restoration company’. We hear how the team of specialists breathed new life into a vintage BMW race car before its appearance at a major motoring event

After 27 years, H-Engineering was given the task to restore a rare BMW Group 5 ex Eddie Cheever factory race car. After two years of major restoration, we are very proud to have brought this amazing car back to life.

We were pleased to have been invited to the BMW Museum in Munich to see the sister car once driven by Marc Surer.

We were very lucky to have been given access by BMW to their photographic archives; this helped with the hours and hours of research that were already involved in taking on such a great project.

BMW invited the car to join the BMW Centenary, celebrated at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This meant full steam ahead to get the car race-ready, but the excitement of such a prestigious event kept our spirits high as we worked into the night for many days.

After a successful test at Donington the week before, the car was now ready to be shown to thousands of spectators for the first time since 1989, when the car was last raced. In the changing conditions, the car performed very well and qualified for the top 40 timed shootout. This made all the hard work worthwhile when the car came over the finish line.
