The first half was largely uneventful with the home side dictating the pace of the match and Rusthall seemingly content to contain rather than attack.
The Rustics’ usual flowing game lacked accuracy and was laboured, a long-range effort by Tommy Lawrence being the only goal attempt of note.
Billy Johnson had to react well in the visitors’ goal when Arlie Desange shot from close range and the teams went into half-time goalless.
The first 20 minutes of the second half were much better from the away team. On 48 minutes Reuel Powell-Downey was released and he fed James Miles who beat a defender to finish neatly.
Ten minutes later Miles arrived late in the box and was found by Steve Camacho, and he slotted home his second.
The game seemed to have been put to bed on 70 minutes when Luke Adams volleyed home from close range after a Powell-Downey shot was only parried by the keeper.
But with five minutes remaining Sutton pulled a goal back when a corner was met at the near post and dispatched well.
WIth the clock ticking down, the home side scored again from a free kick just outside the box which was excellently curled over the wall, giving Johnson no chance. Rusthall were relieved to hear the final whistle shortly afterwards.
The Rustics are second in the Southern Counties East League Division One and now have a weekend off before playing Rochester United at Jockey Farm on Saturday November 30 (kick-off 3pm).
