Men’s hockey: Allberry hat-trick lifts men to second spot

A DECISIVE victory for Tunbridge Wells Men’s 1st XI away to Holcombe lifted the team to second in the league.

Wells started slowly and allowed the home side to pile on the pressure but the game remained scoreless.

Player-coach Ben Allberry gave a stern half-time team talk in order to drum up some composure, and the visitors began the second half, playing some fantastic passing hockey.

Several circle penetrations gave the visitors the lift they needed and they were soon awarded a short corner.

Allberry stepped up and drag-flicked the ball past a flailing Holcombe keeper to put Wells in front. Two more short corners awarded in quick succession gave Allberry his hat-trick from perfectly placed drag-flicks.

Wells were now playing some lovely team hockey with lots of movement off the ball, and perfectly weighted and timed passes to sticks.

Callum Hunter-Wood and Jack Garwood bagged a goal each from some lovely teamwork.

Holcombe managed to score a goal right at the death to deny Tunbridge Wells a merited clean sheet. Allberry picked up the man of the match award and the three points puts Tunbridge Wells into second place in the table behind Maidstone.
