Junior football: New Tunbridge Wells club offers children a sporting chance

A NEW community club, Tunbridge Wells East FC, launched at the TN2 Centre in Sherwood last week, providing much-needed opportunity for children to play the game.

The teams will be coached by MSporti, a local company who already provide training in many primary schools in the area.

The children practiced drills and skills, then played small-sided games in an action-packed hour-long session.

Damien Smith, who brought his son Felix, aged six, said: “Felix has wanted to play football again since he stopped Little Kickers.

“Most dads like to see their little boy playing football, whether it’s for fun in the front garden or with a club. It is great to have a chance to come along and play in a team and pick up some skills. He has had a lot of fun.”

Year One pupil Edward Dennett, aged six, agreed: “I liked playing ‘stuck in the mud’ and I really liked shooting. I wanted to do a harder shot than my sister! I hope I can come again next week.”

Former county councillor Chris Hoare said: “With 218 registered Tunbridge Wells football teams we thought it was about time that this area was represented.

“More than 700 new families will be moving into the area and a football club is an excellent way for the community to mix together, make friendships and get fit.”

The young footballers had a chance to measure the speed of their strikes on goal using the latest equipment – with the fastest shot clocking in at 58mph.

MSporti Director Carl Roberts said: “The first session went really well. It was well attended, and the parents and -community seem really supportive of this club.

“There is definitely a need for a football club here. We have to start somewhere and we have begun the journey.

“The aim is to build from the youngest and increase the number of teams we field and the age groups we have as we grow bigger.”

The coaching sessions cost £2 to attend, and are open to Reception, Year One and Year Two children. They are held from 5-6pm on Wednesdays at the TN2 Centre, Sherwood.
