Hockey: Tunbridge Wells held despite Bekker’s rapid strike

Pam Mills

TUNBRIDGE WELLS could not have got off to a better start when they came up against the side sitting one place above them in East Region Division One South.

From the first whistle a passing move involving six players saw the ball worked upfield and Nelia Bekker fired home from the top of the D.

Broxbourne reacted with aggression and -commitment to win back possession at every opportunity, leading to their equaliser midway through the half.

Then Ollie Gerret found Jemma Stephenson on the base line, whose reverse stick cross was met by Becky Bradbury. Her deflected effort was saved but it fell kindly to Annie Wilson, who scored Wells’ second goal.

The tight battle after the interval saw both sides setting up deep to counter the pressure.

The visitors managed to level the scores and a fiercely competitive game finished all square – a fair result for both sides.
