Football: Tunbridge Wells' Pilbeam rocks Rochester at the double

TUNBRIDGE WELLS continued their recent good form, winning away at Rochester United in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division.

The visitors were rewarded for early pressure with in-form striker John Pilbeam scoring after two minutes, racing on to a through ball from Tom Davey and slipping his shot past the keeper.

Wells should have increased their lead before half-time as Jack Harris saw his shot go inches while Tom Davey, Pilbeam and Jack Harris also had chances.

Rochester started the second half brightly and enjoyed their best spell of pressure in the game with Wells keeper Mohammed Otuyo called into action for the first time in the match.

The visitors had a great chance to extend their lead on 51 minutes when Steven Ita’s shot narrowly missed the target.

Wells did find the net in the 58th minute when Pilbeam beat two defenders and smashing his shot into the bottom far corner.

Davey grabbed a deserved third goal in the 71st minute and then a well-worked corner saw Pilbeam dummy and Ita’s first-time shot beat the keeper only but was headed off the line.

Rochester did pull a goal back in the 82nd minute when a free-kick on the edge of the area squirmed under the body of Otuyo.

Tunbridge Wells take on neighbours Rusthall at Culverden on Saturday [November 11, kick-off 3pm] in the second round of the Challenge Cup.
