Football: Rusthall face test of character to stay on top

Football: Rusthall cannot recover from early double blow

RUSTHALL’S dream of promotion suffered a blow at the hands of a lively Sutton Athletic side who still have an outside chance of securing a top-two slot in Southern Counties East League Division One.

Having sat proudly at the top of the table for most of the season the Rustics could find -themselves falling off of the summit if they lose to title favourites Glebe in their rearranged midweek game at Jockey Stadium tonight (March 22).

Rusthall struggled to get to grips with their lively opponents on a superb playing surface.

Sutton went ahead in the seventh minute when keeper Sean Ingleson’s attempted clearance was charged down by Chris McGinty.

Rusthall looked ragged and seemed unable to hold on to the ball. The home side doubled their lead on 27 minutes through Dan Gummer.

The Rustics must get back to the high standards they have achieved during most of this amazing season if they are to complete the promotion dream that has been looking so likely up until the last two games.
