Cycling: Tunbridge Wells’ Jenkins sets new course record in Romney Marsh

PHILIPPA JENKINS kept up her excellent start to the season, setting a new course record in Kent Cycling Association’s 50-mile time trial in Romney Marsh.

The Southborough & District Wheeler covered the distance in 2hr 2min 43sec and stormed to victory on the Q50/11 course.

Doug Finch competed in the Veterans (Surrey/Sussex) 10-mile time trial on the East Hoathly course, finishing in a time of 33min 21sec.

Further afield and competing against 150 other riders in the Shaftesbury CC 25-mile time trial near Newmarket, Suffolk, Guy Lane completed the E2/25 course in a personal best 57.14.

David Bagge 57.59 and Ian Turner 1:01.27 (a personal best) were also well placed in the event that was won by M. Kerin (Oxford University CC) in 52.47.

Matt Kuwertz (20.54) and David Rumm (21.39) completed the Bossard Wheelers CC 10-mile time trial on the F11/10 course near Tring in Hertfordshire with 120 riders on the start sheet.

The Southborough club were also well represented in the Tour of Cambridgeshire Grand Fondo race, a UCI Gran Fondo World Championships qualifier.

The race was held in challenging windy conditions and across respective age categories SDW riders Rory Barrett, Rob Stephenson, Richard Gray, Paul Greer, Paul Hiscock, Olly Stevens, Cathrine Tarry, Matthew Sumpter, Neil Couchman and Dave Pettitt all rode brilliantly to qualify for the World Championships that will be held later this year in Albi, France.
