Cycling: Southborough & District Wheelers impress in Kent Reliability trial

THE Southborough & District Wheelers [SDW] were well represented in the Kent Cycling Association Reliability trial.

Riders competing in this interclub event are challenged to cover different distances and routes within a specified time.

Maximum points were achieved by SDW’s Bruce Walsh, Hayden Tucker, Si Be and Guy Lane who completed the 100-mile route from Ashford in just over five hours.

There were also impressive performances in the 100km event starting at Claygate, with Rob Stephenson (2rs 59min) leading home David Bagge, Matt Kuwertz and Rory Barrett.

In challenging and windy conditions Omar Malik showed maturity beyond his youthful years to support riders back to the finish, ensuring the club maximised its points haul.

With more than 40 SDW riders competing in a field of 400 the club were very well-placed in the overall standings.

Competing in the London & South East Cyclo Cross League at Happy Valley in Brighton, there were impressive performances from Southborough riders across a number of races.

Glen Whittington came sixth in the senior men’s event with Richard Curtis 51st, while Matt Evans was 28th in the 50+ veterans category.

Tim Johnston (10th), Cameron Preece (28th), Rob Ledger (38th), Bruce Sandell (52nd) and Greg Tate (59th) took part in a highly competitive vets and juniors race.

The club’s younger riders also excelled, with Bryony Fishpool, Felix Ledger, Maurice Tate and Todd Purchas well placed in the juniors race and Theo Sandell powering his way to sixth place in the under-10s.
