Cold comfort as sports clubs have a snow day

THE local sports clubs were hit hard by the Beast from the East’s snowfall last week, in conditions that were more appropriate for the recent Winter Olympics.

Among the casualties of the weather, Tunbridge Wells men’s hockey team were denied their chance to achieve back-to-back promotions.

They require just one point from their last four games to go up to South Premier League Division One – and are aiming to be crowned champions.

This weekend they go to Tulse Hill & Dulwich, then take on Banbury and Guildford, who are second and third in the table respectively.

Tonbridge Juddians and Tunbridge Wells rugby clubs were sidelined because of frozen ground.

Tonbridge Angels FC’s fixture at high-flying Dulwich Hamlet in the Bostik League Premier was also called off.

There was no action in football’s Southern Counties East League Premier Division, where Rusthall find themselves fighting to stay in the top flight after achieving promotion to their highest ever league position last season.

TOUGH TIMES Steve Ashmore’s side have earned just one point since Christmas

On Saturday the Rustics have a massive game as they face bottom of the table Rochester United at the Jockey Farm Stadium. The club still have 12 games to play before the end of April and they must start picking up some points if they are to avoid relegation.

They are currently third from bottom, nine points above both Hollands & Blair and Rochester, but are on a poor run of form has seen them pick up just one point since Christmas.

Joint managers Steve Sands and Steve Ashmore are hoping that their hugely experienced Joe Fuller will be fit again for the run-in.

They have set the team the target of catching Chatham Town who currently sit one place and four points above the Rustics.

Tunbridge Wells are two places above them, and eight points ahead.

Rusthall have been told the final stage of their pitch renovations, the installation of sand drains, will start in May.
