We went to
Basil Wholefoods on Lime Hill Road in Tunbridge Wells is the second of four sites owned by siblings and business partners Matthew and Julia. Launched in April 2008, they’ve since opened two additional outlets in Tonbridge and Penshurst, on top of their flagship on St John’s Road. Their simple philosophy is to create ‘deliciously wholesome food, indulgent cakes and really great coffee’.

We had
As I’d already enjoyed my customary morning black Americano, I was in the mood for something a little sweeter as my lunchtime pick-me-up – and Basil’s mocha was just what the doctor ordered.

We thought

The look
The baristas here know their stuff when it comes to brewing a good cup of coffee, and the presentation is always impeccable.

The taste
The mocha at Basil is smooth, rich and indulgent, ticking all the boxes for a working-day treat. It’s certainly chocolatey, but not overwhelmingly so, making it ideal for when you fancy something naughty, but don’t necessarily have the sweetest of teeth.

The price
At £2.85 for a large or £2.45 for a regular, this is slightly more expensive than your average chain, but the proof is in the pudding, as the generous size, professional presentation and delicious flavour is all served with a smile, just for you. Plus, I’m all in favour of supporting my local economy, knowing that every penny goes a long way.
