Athletics: Tonbridge star Olley moves up rankings with 5,000m record

He finished 16th of 32 starters in a top international field, taking 7.6sec off his personal best which moves him to sixth place on the UK rankings this year.

At the same meeting James West continued his great form, finishing third over 1500m in a time of 3:37.78, just ahead of Olympic medallist Nick Willis of New Zealand.

West went on to record a personal best in the Emsley Carr Mile at the Anniversary Games at the London Stadium, finishing 13th in 3:56.79.

Olley has recently graduated from the University of San Francisco but will remain in the United States after securing a job in the city.

Lucy Reid won the Standard Chartered Great City Run 5km women’s race for the third year in a row, while clubmate Henry Pearce was second in the men’s race.

The route starts and finishes at the Honourable Artillery Company Ground, taking in St Paul’s Cathedral, Guildhall and the Bank of England.

Both athletes have come through the age groups at Tonbridge AC and now pursue careers in the City of London.

Reid completed the course in 17min 6sec while Pearce finished in 15.11.

Also racing were fellow club members Harry Paton (16.38), Ben Reynolds (16.59) and Nichola Evans (19.52).
