Hundreds got a taste of the bubbling beverage scene at Beer Weekend, which saw events staged in several pubs from September 13 to 16.

This inaugural event was the idea of Alex Greig, owner of Fuggles Beer Café, where several events were staged.

He said: “I have always been of the opinion that Tunbridge Wells has become a really good town for drinking beer, there is a great scene bubbling away.

“We have got good enough venues to stage something. It is a good way of promoting it as a beer town, and it’s getting a reputation as a place to eat and drink.”

Other venues hosting events included: The George, The Pantiles Tap, The Beer Boutique, Pig & Porter Brewery, The Bedford, Sankey’s and The Royal Oak.

Live music and speciality food was on the menu for visitors, while there was also time for talks about beer and a pub quiz. Proceedings concluded with a meal at The Small Holding.

Mr Greig continued: “It was all organised on a short time scale. There seemed to be a buzz around town with people checking out different venues. We had a lot of people visiting the town specially, we had someone come down from London.

“I got around every venue over the weekend and there was some good stuff going on. A particular highlight was brewing at Sankey’s with [award winning homebrew champion] Andy Partner.

“If everyone wants to do it again we will crack on and get it done. The biggest challenge was the lack of time to prepare, we wanted to have it alongside Tunbridge Wells Food Month.

“The feedback was great and everyone I spoke to was really positive about it.”

Food Month continues this weekend with the Royal Tunbridge Wells Food and Drink Festival, staged Saturday and Sunday [September 22-23] inside Calverley Grounds from 11am to 6pm.
