Gin is the perfect tonic

Gin is the perfect tonic

19th January 2019

If you can't get thrilled by Veganuary or Dry January then the perfect tonic is surely Ginuary instead? According to a report from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, UK sales of gin over the past year leapt by 53 per cent from £1.26 billion to £1.93 billion. Time then for Times’ drinks editor James Viner to select a few of his favourite gins….

  • Must-Try Inexpensive but Flavoursome Supermarket Gin

Topaz Blue Premium London Dry Gin, England (£13.99, Aldi)

It’s hard to beat this bargain supermarket gin which is made with 10 botanicals, and beautifully refreshing, spicy, citrus fruit-driven and delicious. Top value for the quality and very easy to see why it’s a favourite with Aldi customers. One to keep on standby in the fridge. Alc 40%

  • Multifaceted, Delectable Premium Coastal South Devon Gin

Salcombe Start Point Gin, England (£36.50-£40, Whisky Exchange/Master of Malt/Rude Wines)

Salcombe Start Point gin is made using 13 botanicals distilled in a beautiful 450l Holstein copper still with English wheat spirit and Dartmoor spring water. This award-winning, full-flavoured, smooth and satisfyingly complex Devon gin makes a sensational G&T and Martini (a twist of red grapefruit peel please!). It’s seriously stylish and both its provenance and label are sure to appeal to nautical lovers. Delicious! Alc 44%

  • Exceptional Super Premium Gin for Dry Martini & G&T Aficionados

Berry’s No. 3 London Dry Gin (£32.99-£36, Master of Malt/Whisky Exchange/Waitrose/Berry Bros)

Made with just six botanicals, this modern classic bursts with powerful and amazing juniper and gentle floral notes, and the flavours just go on forever. Now head to the fabled Dukes Bar off St James’s Street in London, very near Berry Bros & Rudd (whose flagship shop at No. 3 gives the gin its name) to have a revelation imbibing one of London’s elite Dry Martinis made with this exceptional spirit (Dukes is supposedly the location where Ian Fleming developed some of his most memorable Bond characters). Splash out, worth it — both the gin and the bar. Alc 46%
