The bonds between local culture and charities

We explore why Tunbridge Wells’ worthy causes and buzzing arts scene continue to thrive

Power of music
Of course, Tunbridge Wells’ ever-thriving music scene is a big contributor to local philanthropy. This weekend, The Forum’s Pickering Jam event will help to raise funds for The Pickering Cancer Drop-in Centre, following a break-in on New Year’s Eve in 2017. Forum co-owner Jason Dormon says: ‘The area’s arts community and audience feel strongly about causes and local issues. Together, we respond quickly and act to address current needs and relevant issues.’

Worthy causes
Last year, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council launched its TW Lotto initiative, shining a light on the dynamic relationship between the town’s arts and charitable institutions. Billed as ‘a fun and easy way to support good causes in Tunbridge Wells’, the weekly online lottery scheme gives ticket buyers the chance to win prizes of up to £25,000, with 60% of sales going to local community projects, to better fund and preserve our cultural heritage.

Remarkable Characters: Mark Wilkinson and Anne Wagstaff

Art and photography
This month marked the start of the Remarkable Characters of Tunbridge Wells exhibition at Woods Restaurant in The Pantiles. Writer Anne Wagstaff and photographer Mark Wilkinson have painted ‘a portrait of the town through images and words’, accompanied by a book of portraits and a ‘Remarkable Raffle’ – the proceeds of which will go towards local children’s charity Fegans, as ‘a way of raising awareness of their services to those who may benefit’.

Annual events
Each year, a whole host of live events take place, funded by the good will of the community. From Local & Live and Jazz on The Pantiles, to New Year’s Eve’s Hug-Many celebrations, local arts venues and cultural institutions benefit hugely from the town’s residents and visitors. Continues Jason: ‘Tunbridge Wells has a strong, healthy local music scene, and an abundance of support, love and encouragement, which we should all be proud of.’
